Abstract [en]
This study examines the ability of Swedish military personnel to collaborate with civilians during Sweden's contribution in Afghanistan, through a social capital perspective. Focusing on trust, norms and bridging social capital, the study analyzes how the military managed relationships with local populations and other actors in a conflict-ridden context. The research is based on qualitative interviews with five participants, all of whom have experience from various roles and periods in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014. The findings highlight that cultural understanding, preparatory training and long-term engagement are crucial for building trust and cooperation. However, these processes are often challenged by short rotation periods and security restrictions. The study also underscores the limitations of social capital theory in conflict environments and emphasizes the need for future research that integrates both military and civilian perspectives.
