Abstract [en]

Hybrid threats consists of a mixture of unconventional, civil, and military methods to reach various goals. These methods can be used in different domains and target different parts of society. For example, cyberattacks target internet infrastructure, psychological warfare targets people’s minds and sabotage targets critical physical infrastructure. Hybrid warfare usually takes place in the grey- zone – the stage between war and peace. It has become a frequent part of modern conflicts and is consistently difficult to engage and manage. As Sweden stands before one of its largest military uprisings in modern time, the hybrid warfare presents threats that make it difficult to predict where Sweden should focus its resources. The purpose of this study is to further the understanding of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 from a perspective of Russian hybrid warfare. Using a qualitative approach, the study conducts content analysis of empiric literature from the annexation of Crimea with the assistance of Hoffman’s theory of hybrid warfare. The results of the study shows that Russia used the hybrid warfare methods of dueling narratives, campaign design, interagency approach and force planning in their annexation of Crimea. The results further imply that dueling narratives was the foremost method in their offensive. Furthermore, the results show that Russia’s simultaneous use of the different methods likely resulted in a more effective operation.
