In this chapter, we investigate the deployment of armed forces personnel in Sweden during the COVID-19 crisis. Our point of departure is the return of “total defence” planning in Sweden in 2015 and how military support to civilian organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic can be seen as a test of peacetime crisis management capabilities, but also of the state of total defence readiness and organization. Empirically, we discuss legal frameworks for domestic deployment of the military, the specific actions and tasks by the Armed Forces during the pandemic, and the potential impact of this experience in terms of civil-military relations, public opinion, and the role of the military in Swedish society.
