This entry introduces the historic and current Arctic and Antarctic interests and policies of Sweden – one of eight states whose territories extend into the Arctic Circle, and one that assumes the role of a steward of the region – and its views on how the principles laid down in international law should guide the development of an Arctic security architecture. It also introduces how Sweden promotes constructive Arctic and Antarctic international cooperation through the Arctic Council and Antarctic Treaty.
