Abstract [en]

This study aims to analyze Russia’s failed operational logistics during the invasion of Ukraine in2022. To do so, the study uses Mosche Kress theory about operational logistics as an analyticalframework. The research problem goes beyond failed operational logistics in modern warfare andthe study contributes to a deeper understanding of the logistical practices of a potential enemy forSweden and NATO. The Swedish armed forces have identified Russia as a real treat to Europeansecurity. The relevance for this study is therefore high. The study aims to explain why the Russianlogistical operations failed which in turn will offer relevant knowledge to help Sweden avoid thesame mistakes as well as to prepare for Russia’s tactics. The study is a theory consuming one casestudy using a qualitative text analysis to collect and sort data. The research shows that Russia lackedflexibility, attainability and continuity. When Russia’s initial plan failed, they had poor backup plansand could not adapt. The Russian tactical units lacked logistical independence, and the Russianlogistics heavily relied on railways for transportation of utilities. Russia’s operational logistics inUkraine 2022 also lacked tempo, survivability and efficiency. However, simplicity in plans werethe core issue for the Russian operational logistics. The Russian plan depended on capturing anairport. When this mission failed the Russian army was left with poor supply lines and a lack oftransportation units. This made the Russian operational logistics vulnerable, and the Ukrainianforces knew how to exploit their weakness effectively.
