Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region in September 2022 has been described as a major tactical success. Previous studies argue that Ukraine’s tactical success during the counteroffensive is mainly based on the prolonged attrition warfare, deception strategy and surprise, before the offensive. There aren’t too many studies on the reasons that led to success during the counteroffensive, especially from a perspective of maneuver warfare. Hence, the purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of Ukraine’s tactical success during the Kharkiv counteroffensive, from a maneuver standpoint, rather than to explain the outcome. To analyze Ukraine’s tactical success, this study conducts a single case study design, informed by Martin van Creveld’s principles for maneuver warfare. The study finds that the most critical success factor during the counteroffensive was Ukraine’s tempo as well as their initial deception. Their tempo was made possible by other success factors, such as Ukraine’s ability to create breakthroughs in Russia’s defensive lines, as well as their ability to surprise Russian forces and effectively utilize combined arms. Finally, Ukraine’s flexibility, as well as their decentralized command, compared to Russia’s, allowed the Ukrainian forces to maintain a greater tempo than Russian’s forces during the counteroffensive. In conclusion, this study deepens the understanding of Ukraine’s tactical success during the counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region in 2022.
