Abstract [en]
Purpose Logistics research encompasses a wide spectrum of publication channels, each with distinct disciplinary scopes, academic rankings, and methodological preferences. While the Academic Journal Guide 2024 identifies 68 relevant journals within operations, supply chain, and logistics research, the Norwegian List ad 29 journals, focused on defense logistics. Successful publication in this field requires researchers to align their work with the thematic scope and methodological expectations of their target journals. This study aims to guide logistics researchers in navigating this diverse landscape by critically examining both the structure of current publication outlets and the methodological preferences. Research design The study adopts a three-phase approach. First, it maps relevant logistics journals using the AJG 2024 and Norwegian List rankings. Second, it profiles these journals in terms of thematic focus and methodological orientation. Finally, a qualitative review of selected articles is conducted to explore how logistics research reflects realist and idealist ontologies and epistemologies. This conceptual framework supports an analysis of how the field positions itself between empirical measurability and relational interpretation. Findings Logistics emerges as an interdisciplinary field situated at the intersection of realism and idealism. The study demonstrates how logistics research balances tangible, quantitative aspects, such as inventory, cost, and delivery metrics, with interpretive, qualitative dimensions including coordination, organizational context, and supply chain relationships. Research implications This philosophical and methodological mapping contributes to a deeper understanding of logistics research by highlighting how foundational perspectives influence both theoretical development and research design. Practical implications The findings offer actionable insights for logistics researchers seeking to publish their work. By identifying methodological trends and journal-specific expectations, the study supports strategic selection of publication channels, increasing alignment and publication success.
