Psychological warfare is a proven strategy for using information against the human mind. It is not surprising that Russia used this type of warfare during the invasion of Ukraine as Russia has tried to influence the Ukrainian people for many years. However, Russia was met with strong resistance during the invasion, which is studied in this essay. A lot of the previous research focuses on Russia and its practices when using psychological warfare. However, there is little research on how this can be countered and how psychological warfare can be used as resistance. The purpose of this essay is to examine the Ukrainian achievements against psychological warfare during the Bucha massacre and there by hopefully retrieve some valuable lessons. To do this, the essay aims to answer the question: How did Ukraine demonstrate its ability to withstand Russian psychological warfare in connection to the Bucha massacre in 2022? The research is conducted through a descriptive study and qualitative text analysis. Martin C. Libicki's theory on information warfare with a focus on psychological warfare is used as a theoretical framework to support the analysis. The results showed that Ukraine demonstrated the ability to resist Russian psychological warfare through the use of several practices. These were narrative, initiative, using the media to your advantage, encouraging and praising its own citizens, creating justice, and using psychological warfare. These practices can be seen as lessons learned and can be studied further to develop tools for defense against psychological warfare.
