När överlägsenhet inte räcker: brittiskt beslutsfattande under Falklandskriget: En kvalitativ studie om förlusterna av HMS Coventry & RFA Sir Galahad

Abstract [en]

This study examines how British decision-making under pressure affected two specific tactical defeats during the 1982 Falklands War: the loss of HMS Coventry and RFA Sir Galahad. Although the UK had a technological and organizational advantage, in both cases it failed to convert this superiority into operational success. The aim of the study is to explain these losses by analyzing how information gathering, orientation and implicit actions worked in practice, based on John Boyd’s theory of the OODA-loop and the concept of Implicit Guidance and Control.

The central question addresses how the theoretical concepts can help explaining the British tactical losses. Through a qualitative analysis of, for instance, official documents and reports, the study finds that slow adaptation to emerging threats, technological limitations and weak command structures, prevented effective action. In both cases, relevant information was available but was not translated into timely action. Furthermore, the absence of a shared situational understanding and a lack of mission command doctrine impeded subordinate units from acting autonomously.

The results shows that military success is not determined only by material superiority but also by the ability to rapidly observe, interpret and respond to changing conditions. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of decision-making under uncertainty and its impact on tactical outcomes. Furthermore, the study offers insights relevant to military education, leadership development, and future doctrinal development.
