Abstract [en]
In 1944 Finland was once again faced against the might of the Soviet Union during the Continuation War, now on the offensive. After reaching the third line of defence, the Soviets were defeated at the decisive battle of Tali-Ihantala – despite being numerically superior.
There exist several theories regarding success of battles focusing on different aspects. Most theories have dedicated the success to either numerical- or material superiority. The purpose of this study is to examine how the Finnish defence of the battle of Tali-Ihantala can be understood by applying the Modern System Theory by Stephen Biddle. The theory uses force employment as the biggest contributing factor to success.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has increased attention on warfare tactics and the new operational context for the Swedish Armed Forces. The operational environment of eastern Finland is roughly the same as that of Tali-Ihantala, and we are also expected to face a locally materially- and numerically superior enemy.
The scientific research regarding the battle has focused on overarching themes rather than tactical or operational principles. The explanatory models that address the outcomes of battles at the tactical level are not aligned with each other, or the result of this battle. The result of the study concludes that the Finnish victory during the battle of Tali-Ihantala can be party understood through the lenes of the Modern System Theory’s defensive aspects. Hence providing a stepping stone for further research regarding the Finnish victory, thus fulfilling its purpose.
