This study compares how King (2019) and Storr (2009, 2021, 2022) formulates the design criterias mainly for modern divisional headquarters, but also for other levels of command.It structures the design investigation according to Brehmer’s (2013) five tiered design logic, and Spak and Carlerbys (2018) factor-model regarding the outer environment.Interpretation of the primary sources has used a hermeneutical method, following Hirsch (1967).The study finds that King and Storr are in agreement regarding the fact that modern headquarters have increased in size, compared to the twentieth century. The two differ in how they perceive the reasons for growth. King finds that it has sprung from a need to handle a more complex surrounding environment. Storr finds that the increase has been due to structural factors and misunderstandings regarding the amount of information that needs to be processed in order to make relevant decisions. The writers also differ in how they perceive the enemy and the nature of modern conflict.The analysis shows how the use of a logical design scheme, and a structural approach to the assumptions regarding the outer environment, can be used to structure, and inform, the design of military command systems.

Uppsatsen är en jämförande litteraturstudie som ställer frågan om vilka former King (2019) respektive Storr (2009, 2021, 2022) anser att nutida militära staberna inom markarenan, bör ha. Jämförelsen utgår från Brehmers (2013) designnivåer, samt Spak och Carlerbys (2018) modell över relationerna mellan ledningssystemet och den omgivande miljön.Vid tolkningen av forskarnas texter har en hermeneutisk metod nyttjats, utifrån Hirsch (1967).Uppsatsen visar att King och Storr har är överens om att moderna staber inom markarenan har vuxit i omfång. King menar att stabernas tillväxt kommer sig av behovet av att hantera förändringar i omvärlden framför allt inom ledningsbehoven och det omgivande samhället, vilket även påverkat konfliktmiljön. Storr menar att stabernas tillväxt skett till följd av ett antal strukturella faktorer och missuppfattningar kring informationsbehov. Uppsatsen visar hur ett designteoretiskt ramverk kan tydliggöra antagna delfaktorer hos den yttre miljön vid utformning av insatssystem.
