The hub for leading international military operations consists of multinational staffs with officers from a large number of nations. Previous research has shown that military organizational culture is influenced by national background, which leads to the need for adaptations to the multinational environment. This study aims to create a deeper understanding of the military-cultural differences and adaptations that Swedish officers experience when servering in multinational staffs in NATO. With Swedish officers as primary sources, a qualitative study is conducted based on Schein´s organization theory and Wong and Gerras cultural dimensions.
The result of the study contribute to an increased understanding and knowledge of the impact of culture on cooperation in a supranational organization since the highest degree of integration is likely to be found in the international headquarters. The conclusion of the study show that Swedish officers serving in NATO staffs experience adaptations to an organizational culture that includes doctrinal governance, leader centricity and dual loyalties.
