The transparent eastern front : Future senior army officers perception of the modern battlefield and its’ demand on command and control (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultatet består i fyra funna teman i intervjuerna.

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to develop a deeper understanding of Army officers’ current perceptions of the battlefield, the command criteria they derive from those perceptions, and how they describe the learning at their units.

The study adopts an abductive approach, using a model concerning the relationship between the command-and-control system, the enemy, and the surrounding environment.

The findings consist of four themes identified through the interviews. The battlefield context is perceived as a war with Russia along NATO’s eastern border. Several phenomena observed in the current war in Ukraine are perceived as enduring features of warfare, while other factors are regarded as conflict specific. Victory on the battlefield is achieved through division- or corps-level command of multidomain manoeuvre warfare.

The high rate of innovation is seen as requiring the military C2 system to establish a direct link between the front line and civilian industry. Faster pace of societal innovation, rather than military capability alone, determines victory.

Several informants describe how they have implemented perceived lessons into their units through what the study terms “troop-level innovation within a rigid organisation”. This captures statements suggesting that change is possible, but that parts within the organisation tend to resist it, even though resistance can be overcome.

The study contributes to research on how assumptions about the operational environment can be utilised in the design of command-and-control systems, as well as how intra-organisational learning functions in practice.
