Training for Resilience : Psychological Resilience and Self-Efficacy in the Swedish Home Guard (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines how participation in Home Guard exercises is associated with Home Guard soldiers’ perceived psychological resilience and self-efficacy. It also explores the extent to which other factors, such as gender, age, years of service in the Home Guard, work experience, and military region, contribute to explaining variation in these outcomes. More specifically, the study analyzes the relationship between participation in Birger Jarl 26 and time since last exercise participation, and psychological resilience and self-efficacy, as well as the extent to which background variables explain additional variation beyond exercise participation.

The study employed a quantitative design, with electronic data collected through survey responses from 127 Home Guard soldiers. Psychological resilience and self-efficacy were measured using the Dispositional Resilience Scale-15 (DRS-15) and the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSE). The collected data were analyzed in Jamovi using correlation and regression analyses. The results indicated that years since participation in Home Guard exercises is positively correlated with perceived psychological resilience and self-efficacy among the Home Guard soldiers. However, no significant effects were found between the specific exercise Birger Jarl 2026 in relation to perceived psychological resilience or self- efficacy. Furthermore, the background variables did not demonstrate significant predictive value for the two psychological constructs examined.

This study may contribute to a deeper understanding of the importance of the Home Guard, its training activities, and psychological factors such as resilience and self-efficacy among Home Guard soldiers, in relation to strengthening Sweden’s defence capability.
