Det vintertida subarktiska klimatets påverkan på markoperationer

Abstract [en]

As the arctic cap melts and tensions rise around the arctic region, the need for capable forces that are able to handle this harsh terrain increases. Previous research indicates that operations in this area produces unique challenges that needs to be handled by armed forces that operate in the area, such as harsh weather, lack of infrastructure and wide boreal forests. Through analysis of ground operations during the Finnish winter war with the use of Biddles Modern system and Kress theory in operational logistics, this essay aims to increase the understanding on how the winter subarctic climate affects ground warfare, and in particular, ground operations.

The result of this study finds that mobile breakthrough and exploitation operations, as well as mobile defensive operations where the most prevalent during the war. Outcomes of these operations showed the climate affected the use of logistics, as well as emphasizing the importance of mobility and preparing forces for the harsh conditions. By exploiting the harsh terrain and climate, Finnish forces could cut of soviet supply lines. By also adapting their own logistics to the roadless terrain by creating roads for logistical transport through wooded areas, Finnish forces could supply their forces faster, as well as protect their own supply lines. By identifying these factors and adaptations, this study contributes to the overarching research in the field of winter warfare.
