Abstract [en]
This thesis encompasses learning in military organisations and how war experiences alter officer’s training and education. Sources from the Swedish Armed Forces officer’s training schools during 1910-1925 are systematically and qualitatively examined. The period contains peace, war, and post-war circumstances. The officer’s education and training system in Sweden is compared to Germany’s dito to create a comparative study of a war-fighting country and a non-fighting country, and the possible affect a war had on their armed forces’ officer’s training, respectively. The thesis also contains comparisons between the branches, analysing changes in both the army and marine schools’ curricula in both countries.
Changes in the curricula from all the war schools in Sweden during the period show some signs of learning from the First World War, even though Sweden did not take part in the war. However, there are differences between the different schools, branches, as well as between the countries. In essence, the Swedish Armed Forces’ officer’s training system was kept intact during and after the war, albeit with some changes. The German system was re-made during the war, and again after. The study shows nuances of adaptation and indicates some lessons learned from the First World War in Sweden, not previously covered in research.
