Denna uppsats undersöker hur Boxerkodexen speglar den spanska kolonialmaktens legitimering av sitt koloniala projekt i Asien. Kodexen, ett manuskript från 1500-talet, innehåller illustrationer och beskrivningar av asiatiska och stillahavsfolk under den spanska kolonialtiden. This thesis examines how the Boxer Codex reflects the Spanish colonial power's justification of its colonial project in Asia. The Codex, a 16th-century manuscript, contains illustrations and descriptions of Asian and Pacific peoples during the Spanish colonial period. Previous research has primarily focused on its visual and ethnographic content while the textual depictions have been analyzed to a limited extent. By applying Patrick Porter's theory of Military Orientalism and analyzing the technological and cultural aspects of the military depictions, the thesis explores how the military capacities and tactics of Southeast Asian peoples are portrayed. These descriptions reveal how Spain legitimized its colonial military project and constructed a narrative of military and cultural superiority. The thesis provides new insights into how colonial narratives were shaped and legitimized, while offering a deeper understanding of the interplay between text, history, and imperialist ideology.
