Abstract [en]

The current political state of the world is heavily reliant on alliances, bilateral and multilateral agreements. As sovereign nations' national defenses grow more reliant on alliances and transnational agreements, the actions and intentions of allies have profound implications on each state’s National defense strategies. Following more than 200 years of neutrality, Sweden as of 2024 has been accepted as a member of NATO, thus interweaving the nation’s national defence with its new official allies. As a global super power, the United States wields a large influence within the defense alliance and its members. Thus, this study aims to explore the relationship between the U.S. and NATO during President Trump’s first term, the Biden administration and Trump’s current term. The purpose of this is to highlight possible trends of the U.S.-NATO partnership. The study is a case study with structured, focused comparison using Glenn Snyder’s Alliance Theory to formulate a framework for the analysis of the three Presidents’ National Security Strategies. Furthermore, an extrapolation will be made to explore what NATO could possibly look like in the future. The finding of the study is that the United States’ view toward NATO has shifted negatively during the past three presidential terms. The current presidential administrations’ view on the alliance is the worst it has been in the past decade.
