    Abstract [en]

The principles of war are considered timeless and are described differently depending which scholar is studied. The purpose of the thesis is to further the discussion on the principles. This thesis focuses on surprise and conducts a case study with a theoretical framework based on Basil Liddell Hart and Jim Storr to examine if the framework can explain what factor was the most contributing for achieving surprise in the cases of the battle at Golan heights 1973 and the assault on the port of Narvik 1940.

The results show that movement is the most contributing factor, but can be critiqued because of the dilemma posed by surprise. It can only be proven that surprise have been successfully achieved after knowing the outcome. The results also argues that the principles of war are based on previous observations and will therefore be able to explain the outcome of most events that take place within the realm of contemporary military theory.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

What role will Sweden and the Swedish Armed Forces play in the new Arctic, in view of the expanded concept of security?

This paper deals with the changing geopolitical situation in the Arctic, the changes are due largely to climate change. These changes impose new conditions for the region, it's about new conditions for the indigenous population, but also for the nations of the region. It's about ways of living and traveling in the region, opportunities to exploit its natural resources, but also on environmental damage and a military rearmament in the Arctic.

The purpose of this work is to identify and clarify what in the Arctic region, potentially affecting Swedish security and defense policy, and what Sweden perceive to be security threats. My contribution to research is that with the help of Barry Buzans, Ole Wævers and Jaap de Wilde's concepts of sectors, identify and clarify what of the "Arctic problem" that can be attributed to, for Sweden interesting security policy issues.

The essay will clarify how changes in the Arctic affect security in the region. The essay will also clarify the Swedish official security stance to the Arctic and the role of what the Swedish armed forces have to play in the region.

The results show that there are some potential security challenges in the region. The survey also shows that the Swedish official stance is not quite clear and it is affecting the Armed Forces in the sense that its role in the Arctic do not become completely clear.

Vilken svensk säkerhet?: En kvalitativ studie av Försvarsberedningens rapporter utifrån Köpenhamnsskolans teori om ett vidgat säkerhetbegrepp2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Given the armed conflict in Ukraine, the terrorist attacks in Paris and elsewhere in Europe and the pressing issue of climate change one could argue that there are no longer room for just one sector in security studies. Based on Barry Buzan, Ole Wæver and Jaap de Wilde’s theory of securitization the aim of this paper is to study whether the Swedish Defense Committee perceive threats in any sectors other than the traditional military sector in its two reports or not and therefore also if the Defense Committee has adapted the wider security concept; and if so answer the question of what other sectors the Committee put forward in the reports. The aim is also to compare the findings in the two reports with each other to point out similarities and differences the Defense Committee’s perception of threats. The method used in this paper was an intense qualitative content analysis where the author manually examined the two reports to find indications on what kind of threats was present in the reports and how they were presented. The result of the study shows that all sectors with the exception of the societal sector in the Copenhagen School were present in the reports. An additional result of the study was that there were many similarities and differences in the reports; one similarity being that Russia was perceived as a threat in both reports while one distinction was the only in the latest report were a global financial crisis perceived as a threat.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The object of this essay is, from a demonstrator perspective, to present a proposition on what sort of surface to air missile would be suitable as a SAM-demonstrator in 2010. To reach the object, the view of several authorities has been described and after an analysis of the text the conception demonstrator have been defined and the different objects and levels been made concrete. The gathering of information from unclassified sources regarding the threat from airborne weapons, the tasks of the air defence units and the technological development will form the base for a comparison between threat and the performance of the SAM missiles. All this information will from the basis for the discussion on what is to be demonstrated and how this demonstration will be performed. Finally two systems will be identified to meet the demands of the demonstrator, one of them will be chosen. The results of the discussions are that the demonstrator must be able to combat an attack aircraft within 100km range, be able to combat a cruise missile with a speed of M3-4 attacking from high altitude and in due time be able to combat a tactical ballistic missiles. To meet these demands a long-range surface to air missile is required. The demonstration ought to be performed with an existing system to ensure that the demonstration is performed with a SAM system that is as complete as possible due too the important developing phases on the RMA concept. This is more important than the need for technological development on long-range SAM’s. The Astair-30 missile has been chosen as a suitable example for a long-range of the shelf surface to air missile demonstrator. The primary motives are the ability to engage many attack aircraft’s at long range and cruise missiles with all required capabilities.

    Abstract [en]

International statistics, from incident organisations and police authorities, prove thatintentional computer network penetrations, attempts to penetrate computer networks andcrimes related to IT increase between 60 and 100 percent every year. The fact thatpenetration can be accomplished proves that existing conventional methods for protection arenot always sufficient. Swedish Armed Forces are becoming increasingly more dependent onIT, and are influenced directly as well as indirectly from this development. This research paper accomplishes a brief inventory and description of conventional as well asdeceptive methods for computer network protection. The purpose is to evaluate in what waydeceptive methods contribute to increasing information security in the Swedish ArmedForces in relation to conventional methods. Each method is evaluated with a number ofabilities that are important from an information security perspective. A partial purpose is alsoto investigate if deceptive methods can contribute to Swedish Armed Forces’ ability to carryout information operations. Each deceptive method is evaluated with a number of abilitiesthat, according to the Swedish Armed Forces, are important to be in possession of duringinformation operations. This research paper proves that deceptive protection not only increases the ability of theSwedish Armed Forces to protect their information systems but also their ability to carry outinformation operations. This research paper also proves that deceptive protection does nothave the power of replacing conventional protection, but that it is a complement.

    Abstract [en]

One of the most efficient countermeasures towards deception is awareness and knowledge that in fact deception is being performed. Hence, if the general level of knowledge within the main population of Sweden would be higher, it would probably hamper the effects of a deception operation if the population anticipated it. In order to counter deception, awareness that one could be encountered to deception and analyze the incoming information accordingly is a major protection. Furthermore in combination with mental awareness the counterdeception actions need to be managed from a central Swedish national level and well-coordinated between authorities within the governmental structures. This is in order to fully cover the wide spectra of channels of information that probably will be used within deception operations toward Sweden.

The primary objective within a deception plan is to manipulate a human mind, not the technical sensors or systems.  Therefor the reasonable best way of counteract deception should lie within preparing the human mind. But paradoxological, the more aware one´s mind is regarding deception, the more one´s mind will discover deception.

Vilseledning som försvar: Defensiv förberedande vilseledning prövad mot Wardens systemteori2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the survey is to test whether a smaller state can use deception to reduce the impact of an opponent who uses Wardens theory regarding the enemy as a system. The survey focuses on an opponent's target acquisition before an attack and the deception that might complicate the target acquisition. The survey presents a number of ways to implement defensive deception, both before and during an attack. To aid the survey a fictitious target acquisition within Sweden has been produced with the support of Wardens literature and with the support of other sources. A comparison is made between the identified vulnerabilities and existing vulnerability reports.

The survey has shown that all the presented fictitious targets except one has some use of the defensive deception as presented. Furthermore the survey has presented credible targets in Sweden that an opponent might choose to attack if the opponent makes use of Wardens theory. The survey has shown several vulnerabilities in Sweden if the opponents makes use of Wardens theory.

Vinna eller försvinna!: En studie av afghanska arméns krigföringsförmåga2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

How can the outcome of a war be measured, in what way is it possible to impartially determine who won or lost. In many cases the result is obvious, as there is no doubt that Great Britain won the Falklands war, the outcome on the battlefield was equivalent of the perception of who won the war. But in many modern wars the situation can be different, the outcome may be disputed, or it is even hard to understand if the war has finished at all. This essay is using score-keeping theory, which is a way to analyze the outcome of a war, who won? The case analyzed in this essay is the Lebanon war in 2006 which was fought between Israel and Hezbollah and is interesting because the result is both much-disputed and it was fought between a government and an organization that was deployed within and acting from another state. The purpose of this essay is therefore to analyze the 2006 Lebanon war by applying the score-keeping theory. The scientific question to be answered is: Which participant can be stated to have won the 2006 Lebanon war on the basis of score-keeping theory. The design of the study is a theory-consuming survey of the 2006 Lebanon war, where the given variables from the theory are operationalized to be set against a selection from the empirics. The survey´s result shows that according to the score-keeping theory Hezbollah is considered to have won in the 2006 Lebanon war. Furthermore, the survey shows a number of challenges in applying the score-keeping theory in the 2006 Lebanon war, given the asymmetry that prevailed between the participants.

Visualizing a time-space constraint increases performance in a dynamic search task2010In: Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making, ISSN 1555-3434, E-ISSN 2169-5032, Vol. 4, no 4, p. 275-287Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a display manipulation designed to support search tasks in which the location of the target is unknown and changes over time. The problem is analogous to that of a naval search task when there is an initial sighting and then the naval force must guide its search vehicles to reestablish contact with the fleeing target. The display manipulation visualizes a dynamic constraint on the area where a fleeing target can be found and adjusts its shape to the environment and to the search efforts. Forty participants without prior knowledge of search tactics completed 12 trials in an experiment that compared performance with and without the visualization aid and controlled for learning effects. The results suggest that this visualization improves performance in the dynamic search task. They further suggest that the visualization was easy to learn but that the learning effect did not transfer to a condition without visualization. The results have practical utility for both military and civil search tasks, and they are consistent with other research that emphasizes that control interfaces should make constraints in the task environment perceptually available.

Visualizing the Field of Safe Travel Increases Performance in a Naval Movement Task2011In: Proceedings of IEEE International Multi-Disciplinary Conference on Cognitive Methods in Situation Awareness and Decision Support (CogSIMA), Miami, FL, 2011, p. 252-256Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates a display manipulation designed to support movement tasks where the location of a threat is uncertain and dynamic. The problem is analogous to that of a naval transportation task, where a ship has to move from one port to another under threat from several enemies of which only the initial positions are known. The display manipulation visualizes a time-dependent constraint on the area where an enemy can be, given its initial position and maximum speed, and adjusts the shape to the environment. The region outside this area represents a field of safe travel where the transport ship can move safely. Forty participants without prior knowledge of the task completed sixteen trials in an experiment that contrasted with and without visualization, and controlled for learning effects. The results suggest that the visualization significantly improved performance in the movement task and that it had a large effect. The visualization also significantly reduced variance in performance, which suggests that it generated a more consistent behavior among participants. It was also easy for the participants to make effective use of the visualization, and once exposed to the visualization, the learning transferred to a condition without the visualization. This study have practical utility for designers of combat information systems as the results indirectly suggest that people have difficulties in inferring the locations of targets of which they only have fragmentary information. Including similar visualizations in the design may consequently increase overall system performance.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate if the medical function in the Air Defence Battalion is enough.

The question to be answered in this essay is as follows: When, considering deployment geometry, medical time-demands and evacuation capacity does the medical function become a limiting factor for the AD Battalion?

A descriptive method is used in this essay. Material has been gathered and analysed to show the limitations of the battalion considering the medical function. A study has also been made. The material and the study are used as a base in the discussion and from the discussion and the results from the analysis, conclusions are drawn.

One of these conclusions is that: It is not probable that all units in the Air Defence Battalion will receive proper medical attention within the time-span established in the guiding medical documents.

    Abstract [no]

Vulnerability and Power: Social Justice Organizing in Rockaway, New York City, after Hurricane Sandy2017Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study about disasters, vulnerability and power. With regards to social justice organizing a particular research problem guides the work, specifically that emancipatory projects are often initiated and steered by privileged actors who do not belong to the marginalized communities they wish to strengthen, yet the work is based on the belief that empowerment requires self-organizing from within. Through an ethnographic field study of social justice organizing in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in Rockaway, New York City, the thesis explores whether and how vulnerable groups were empowered within the Occupy Sandy network. It is a process study that traces outside activists attempts at empowering storm-affected residents over time, from the immediate relief phase to long-term organizing in the recovery phase. The activists aimed to put to practice three organizing ideals: inclusion, flexibility and horizontality, based on a belief that doing so would enhance empowerment. The analysis demonstrates that collaboration functioned better in the relief phase than in the long-term recovery phase. The same organizing ideals that seem to have created an empowering milieu for storm-affected residents in the relief phase became troublesome when relief turned to long-term recovery. The relief phase saw storm-affected people step up and take on leadership roles, whereas empowerment in the recovery phase was conditional on alignment with outside activists’ agendas. Internal tensions, conflicts and resistance from residents toward the outside organizers marked the recovery phase. It seems that length of collaborative projects is not the only factor for developing trust but so is complexity. The more complex the activities over which partners are to collaborate the less easy it is. Based on this we could further theorize that the more complex the work is the more challenging it is for privileged groups to give away control. The internal struggles of the organization partially explain the failures to influence an urban planning process that the organization attempted to impact, which connects the micro-processes with broader change processes toward transformation of vulnerability.

    Abstract [sv]

A)2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to highlight possible developments for US Grand Strategy, as a resultof the terror events occurring September 11 2001. To reach this aim I am going topresent how US Grand Strategy has developed since September 11, and I also goingto present the strategy existing today. The aim is also to see if traditional analyticmodelsstill are working to demonstrate alternative US Grand Strategies. The empirical materials that are used in this essay are mostly speeches and documentsfrom people, who are representing the official US foreign and security-policy.For the analytic part in the essay, I have used two different analytic-models todescribe changes in US Grand Strategy. The first one is a model that Alexander Nachthas developed, and that one is described in the summer edition 1995 of WashingtonQuarterly. The second model is the one by Lars Maddox, which are described in “USGrand strategy Alternatives – After the Cold War”.I can establish the fact that US grand Strategy has changed since the attacks againstUS occurred September 11. The strategy today is more firm and unilateral in itscharacter, compared to the strategy dominated the period before September 11, andalso if we compares it with the Clinton-administration strategy.I establish the fact that there is more than one possible way for US grand Strategy todevelop. The development is very depended of how the scenario in the rest of theworld is developing, and especially how the crisis in the Middle East is going todevelop. The most likely as I see it is that US are going to draw nearer to a moremultilateral approach than the approach existing today.Multilateral organizations, coalition-partners and allies are the best and most longtermsolution to increase safety for US.I also notice that the existing analytic-models still are function to describe alternativechoices for US Grand strategies. But there is a need to develop those models, so theybetter mirror and describe the complex world, which foreign and security-policy iscomposed of.

Väktare, ombud, kritiker: Sverige i amerikanskt säkerhetstänkande, 1961-19682009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Historically, soldiers on foot have carried their personal equipment. Other equipment that the soldier needed was often transported in wagons drawn by different beasts of burden. As the high operational tempo, and above all, forward speed has increased, the need to carry all necessary equipment also has grown. And, as new systems have been added, the load to carry for the individual soldier has thus increased.

The survey has been conducted as a comparative study of different types of unmanned ground vehicles, so-called UGV systems, by analyzing their possibilities and limitations based on the requirements of the scenario and also the requirements by the military user in solving a specific tactical task. The criteria for comparison have been developed from the scenario using the concept of military utility, developed by Andersson et al. (2015).

The study concludes that the military benefits connected to the UGV systems are that the individual mobility and endurance of the soldiers increases, and that the risk of injuries from carrying heavy loads decreases. A soldier not exhausted from carrying heavy loads has a higher combat preparedness and acts with greater focus. The operational mobility and endurance of the unit also increases and, depending on which UGV systems are used, different degrees of military benefit are to be found.

Värdering av personburna soldatigenkänningssystem, så kallade Combat Identification Systems (CID), avsedda att förebygga vådabekämpning i urban miljö2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since long ago different methods have been used in order to recognize or identify own units. Most often the methods consisted of different symbols and signs placed on banners, flags, uniforms and so on. Today several different technical systems for recognition and identification of own units, so called Combat Identification (CID), are entering service. The systems show more or less complexity in their construction, hold advantages as well as disadvantages and thus contribute in varying degree to the ability to successfully carry out CID.

The purpose of this essay is to compare different CID-systems designed for ground soldiers, in order to increase the knowledge of what military utility the different systems may have in terms of reducing the risk of friendly fire when a unit is deployed in an urban environment.

When comparing the different systems it is clearly that CID-systems only give military utility when a unit has a task where the battle progress is slow, such as surveillance. The CID-system that especially excels when used in surveillance is the TIR-systems.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to study the Swedish Armed Forces interoperability with NATO. The study also aims to see if there are any differences in interoperability whit in different dimensions, which are organizational, behavioural, logistic and technical. The foundation of the analysis is based on Michael Codners theory Dimensions of Multinational Interoperability and the tools used to measure the grade of interoperability are LISI and OIM.

This study shows that the Swedish Armed Forces is most interoperable in the dimensions of organizational and logistic and least in behavioural. Technical could not be measured by the analysis tools, but the examination show that interoperability occurs between The Swedish Armed Forces and NATO.

This study recommends a thorough examination of all the dimensions to gain a greater understanding of the levels of interoperability and in order to be able to recommend more elaborated suggestions on alternatives to improve the interoperability.
