“The Gypsy Question” and its answers: Anti-Roma propaganda in the press of the District of Galicia and the General Government 1941–19442020In: Baltic Worlds, ISSN 2000-2955, E-ISSN 2001-7308, Vol. XIII, no 2-3, p. 29-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study offers the first analysis of anti-Roma propaganda in the District of Galicia (Distrikt Galizien, the DG), a part of the GeneralGovernment (Das Generalgouvernement, the GG), by studying thedailies and several periodicals published in the District. It constitutes the first step in studying anti-Roma propaganda in the GG. While the wartime anti-Roma propaganda employed the pre-war images of Roma, those were manipulated, distorted and radicalized in accordance to the needs of the Nazi regime in the DG. The radicalization in the press paralleled introduction of regulations with anti-Roma edge and scaling up of Roma persecution in the GG. By 1943, the propaganda pieces alluded to solving “the Gypsy question” in the way that “the Jewish question” had been solved.

Visions of Future Warfare in Russian Military Publications2021In: Journal on Baltic Security, ISSN 2382-9222, Vol. 7, no 2, p. 27-37Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article discusses visions of future warfare articulated in recent Russian military publications. There seems to be agreement among Russian scholars that future war will be triggered by Western attempts to promote Western political and economic interests while holding back Russia's resurgence as a global power. The future war with the West is viewed as inevitable in one form or another, whether it is subversion and local wars or large-scale conventional war. While the danger of conventional war has declined, according to several scholars, the West is understood to have a wide range of non-kinetic means at its disposal that threaten Russia. In order to withstand future dangers, Russia has to be able to meet a large number of kinetic and non-kinetic threats at home and abroad. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

State formation, public resistance and Nation-bvuilding in Scandinavia in the Era of Revolution and Napoleon, 1789-18152003In: Collaboration and resistance in Napoleonic Europe: state-formation in an age of upheaval, c. 1800-1815 / [ed] Michael Rowe, New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2003, p. 203-212Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The revolutionary era in Europe, beginning with the age of Enlightenment and the War of American Independence, culminated with the French Revolution and the Napoleonic epoch (1789–1815). In this period the map of Scandinavia, together with northern Europe, changed fundamentally. Modern Europe, as we know it today, was beginning to take shape. For the Nordic countries and peoples, this era of state formation and nationbuilding was of crucial importance and its structural effects remain with us to this day. In 1809–10 following the loss of Finland to Russia, Sweden elected a Danish prince, Karl August, as heir-apparent in an attempt to form a greater Scandinavian state. The Scandinavian dream collapsed, however, when Karl August died suddenly in 1810 and events took another course. Instead, Scandinavia emerged in 1815 as four Nordic nations ruled by three monarchs: Sweden and Norway, Denmark, and Finland under the Russian Tsar. The established dynasties of the Vasas and Oldenburgs were replaced in Sweden/Norway and Finland with the Bernadottes and Romanovs respectively, though the Oldenburgs weathered the storm in Denmark.

    Abstract [en]

The geopolitical location of the Baltic Sea region between the Russian heartland and the Atlantic Ocean has shaped developments in this part of Europe for at least a millennium. The traditional narrative in the Baltic Sea tells of hegemonic powers succeeding each other in a continuous struggle to control trade routes and exclude non-littoral powers, from the Vikings to Tsarist Russia. Since industrialization, war and military tension in the Baltic Sea have reflected European and global great power rivalries more than regional tensions. While the hegemonic powers in the Baltic Sea have changed repeatedly through the centuries, infrastructure and terrain in the region have always been unfavourable to the large-scale projection of military power, giving a defender the upper hand. Now, the increased range and accuracy of modern weapon systems seem to have changed that. Moreover, climatic changes expected in the coming century may transform the geopolitical environment even further.

    Abstract [en]

The Russian navy was suspicious of Swedish neutrality in 1914, as Sweden had been arming itself for many years, and almost unwittingly dragged the country into the war. Russia was seen as the main threat to Sweden, but Germany and Britain were also perceived as potential aggressors. The navy bore the main burden of protecting Sweden’s neutrality during the following years, and also played a major role during the Swedish expedition to the Åland Islands in 1918. However, Sweden failed to acquire Åland after the war, and eventually became disappointed in the League of Nations and collective security.

Sweden and the Petsamo-Kirkenes Offensive, October 1944 - January 19452021In: The Journal of Education and Science “ISTORIYA”, ISSN 2079-8784, Vol. 12, no 7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article deals with the problems of war and post-war Europe and the role of Sweden in the European relations in this period. The Petsamo-Kirkenes offensive and the Soviet Union military advance into northern Norway revealed the new situation when Sweden’s neutrality began to shift from adaption to Germany towards a more pro-allied stance. In these circumstances the Swedish neutrality was under the severe test: some of the cabinet ministers worried that this opportunistic shift in neutrality policy would affect the country’s international image after the war. Yet the reality imposed its conditions. This applied to the Sweden’s efforts to get Finland out of the war, reception of refugees from Finnish and Norwegian territories, ferrying wounded German soldiers across their territory. As the USSR had more military success in Lapland and Northern Norway in Swedish political and military circles increased fears about the future of the country and the post-war order. After the war, the Defense Staff stated, two antagonistic, global alliances would dominate the international system and it would be difficult for small powers like Sweden to remain neutral or independent in this environment. For Sweden to join any of the two great power blocs would obviously entail major risks. The creation of a Scandinavian defensive alliance was considered as an alternative to neutrality. Thus, it was the Petsamo-Kirkenes offensive and the advance of the USSR to the West that caused serious reflections in the political life of Sweden about the future, about how a small country should act and survive in the conditions of the continuing ideological conflict of the great powers.

Vietnamkriget och de svenska diplomaterna 1954-19752019Book (Refereed)
