The Second World War2018 (uppl. 2nd)Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Second World War was the most devastating conflict in human history and one which provides innumerable lessons - military, political, and moral. Across the globe, both soldier and civilian endured suffering on a scale previously unknown to humanity as nations grappled with the demands of total war.

    A dangerous pathway? Toward a theory of special forces2019Ingår i: Comparative Strategy, ISSN 0149-5933, Vol. 38, nr 4, s. 255-275Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores what is considered by some to be a dangerous pathway:the development of a theory of special forces. The world is now inthe third age of special forces and these secret military units are atthe forefront of the use of force in international relations. This research identifies a large theory-knowledge gap concerning these military “first responders” for modern nation-states and offers a tentative theory of special forces that goes beyond traditional annihilation/attrition models of wartoward a new anaphylaxis model. It makes the case that the theory pathwayis not dangerous, but emancipatory.

Resistance and the Modern State: Exploring a society-based resistance capability pathway for Sweden in the shadow of the War in Ukrain2024Ingår i: Journal of Military and Strategic Studies, E-ISSN 1488-559X, Vol. 23, nr 2, s. 53-73Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The changed security environment in Europe with the outbreak of the War in Ukraine has radically affected defence postures and spending in neighbouring countries, not least in Sweden, which has abandoned its neutrality stance for the first time in 200 years. This research explores whether the development of a society-based resistance capability would augment Sweden’s total defence posture and increase its ability to defend itself in the short term as it rebuilds its conventional forces. It draws upon historical examples of successful resistance organisations such as the Special Operations Executive (SOE) in the Second World War to inform the discussion and concludes that creating a society-based resistance capability would greatly enhance Sweden’s defence posture as well as complement the long-term development of its conventional forces as they prepare to join the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO).

Special Forces: Leadership, Processes and the British Special Air Service (SAS)2017Ingår i: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Special Operations Forces / [ed] Gitte Højstrup Christensen, Copenhagen: Royal Danish Defence College Publishing House, 2017, 1, s. 74-87Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the research question of what kind of leadership, processes, and work climate best support employee-driven/bottom-up innovation in SOF. It starts with the suggestion that the term, Special Operations Forces (SOF), needs to be intellectually unpacked and its diverse elements (of which Special Forces are just one part) disaggregated in order to elicit definitional clarity. From this conceptual starting point, it becomes immediately clear that Special Forces represent the ‘special’ component in the SOF designation. This research contends they are a new type of soldier (and a product of modern warfare) that is defined by differentness in relation to conventional forces and activities within a battlespace, working in traditionally restricted areas. David Stirling, one of the founders of the famed British Special Air Service (SAS), is highlighted as an exemplar of the sort of leadership that provoked rare operational level effects. The paper also suggests that unorthodox forces operating in a unique operational environment demand unusual personality types and atypical command/control processes encapsulated by the so-called ‘Chinese Parliament’ that emerged in the SAS.

Special Operations in Contemporary Warfare: Challenges and Opportunities2017Ingår i: Tidskrift i Sjöväsendet, ISSN 0040-6945, nr 2, s. 168-174Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This study suggests that the world is now in a third age of Special Forces and one that in all likelihood will witness an increasing utility of these unusual military units in orthodox and unorthodox warfare in international relations.

The Collapse of Yugoslavia 1991-19992022 (uppl. 2)Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In 1991, an ethnically diverse and peaceful region of Europe descended into violence, lawlessness, bitter hatred and chaos, almost overnight to the bewilderment of international observers. Communities fractured along lines of ethnic and religious affiliation, and the ensuing fighting was deeply personal, resulting in horrific brutality, rape, torture and genocide, causing the deaths of thousands of people. Drawing on the latest research for this new edition, Alastair Finlan examines the internal upheavals of the former Yugoslavia and their international implications, including the failure of the Vance-Owen plan; the first use of NATO in a combat role and in peace enforcement; and the war in Kosovo, unsanctioned by the UN but prosecuted by NATO forces to prevent the ethnic cleansing of the region.

Updated and revised, with specially commissioned colour maps and all new images throughout, this is a concise overview of the tragic conflict in former Yugoslavia and its significant consequences.

The shape of warfare to come: a Swedish perspective 2020–20452021Ingår i: Defense and Security Analysis, ISSN 1475-1798, E-ISSN 1475-1801, Vol. 37, nr 4, s. 472-491Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This research explores the shape of warfare to come over the next twenty-five years from a Swedish perspective. It is evident that change in the practice of warfare is apparent in international relations today due to the use of innovative new technologies. These developments raise profound practical and conceptual questions for armed forces as to what do these new systems mean for the prosecution of warfare and the intellectual ideas/knowledge base that underpin the contemporary application of force. This research offers a tentative exploration of three aspects (artificial intelligence, autonomous platforms and the future battlefield: the soldier level) framed in the context of the traditional environments of air, land and sea to interrogate their meaning for Sweden and future warfare.

The Strategic Culture of the United Kingdom2023Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Strategic Culture / [ed] Kerry M. Kartchner; Briana D. Bowen; Jeannie L. Johnson, New York: Routledge, 2023Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This handbook offers a collection of cutting-edge essays on all aspects of strategic culture by a mix of international scholars, consultants, military officers, and policymakers.

The volume explicitly addresses the analytical conundrums faced by scholars who wish to employ or generate strategic cultural insights, with substantive commentary on defining and scoping strategic culture, analytic frameworks and approaches, levels of analysis, sources of strategic culture, and modalities of change in strategic culture. The chapters engage strategic culture at the civilizational, regional, supra-national, national, non-state actor, and organizational levels. The volume is divided into five thematic parts, which will appeal to both students who are new to the subject and scholars who wish to incorporate strategic culture into their toolbox of analytical techniques. Part I assesses the evolving theoretical strengths and weaknesses of the field. Part II lays out elements of the theoretical and methodological foundations of the field, including sources and components of strategic culture. Part III presents a number of national strategic cultural profiles, representing the state of contemporary strategic culture scholarship. Part IV addresses the utility of strategic culture for practitioners and scholars. Part V summarizes the key theoretical and practical insights offered by the volume’s contributors.

This handbook will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, defense studies, security studies, and international relations in general, as well as to professional practitioners.
