Tanks in jungle : A study of tanks operating in junglewarfare during the 20th century (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The usage of tanks in jungles isn’t discussed in Sweden, and this is naturally because of the lack of jungles in our nation.

We have although sent infantry fighting vehicles and armored cars to nations that had jungle terrain, and it can’t be excluded that we one day will send tanks to said terrain.

The purpose of this paper is to examine if tanks is proper to use in jungle warfare, and to examine their strengths and weaknesses in therein.

The capabilities of the tank in jungle terrain are analyzed from three of the basic capabilities: weapons effect, movement and protection.

They will be looked at separately at first to show strengths and weaknesses that tanks and separate systems have in dense Forrest terrain.

Finally the capabilities will be analyzed together with previous conflicts, mostly the second world war and the Vietnam war, to get a result that is treating modern vehicles.

The result that was showing during the paper was that the tank as a system worked in jungle terrain, and that the effectiveness of a tank unit is depending on the commanding officer, and that he can use the unit in the right way.
