Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to identify the type of leadership and its relation to group dynamics efficiency as it appears in the work organization of a military ship in the Swedish Navy. The study is of a qualitative and explorative character and includes semi structured interviews with different categories of employed personnel on two different mine hunters. Six interviews have been carried out, representing three hierarchical levels of work organization at the mine hunters. The interviews explored three themes; leadership, group dynamics and efficiency. The results show that the most common used leadership on the mine hunters is the situational leadership style. In the analysis the results of the study are related to the theoretical model of “transformational leadership”. The analysis shows that the model does not include “situational leadership”. The model could be even more elaborated and usable for analyses of military organizations, such as the mine hunters, if it were to be inclusive of the “situational leadership style”.

Abstract [sv]

Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka vilken typ av ledarskap, och dess påverkan på gruppdynamikens effektivitet, som förekommer på militära fartyg inom svenska flottan. Studien utnyttjar en kvalitativ metod som omfattar intervjuer av semistrukturerad karaktär med olika kategorier anställda på två minröjningsfartyg. Sammantaget har sex anställda på de två fartygen intervjuats och de representerar tre hierarkiska nivåer i fartygens arbetsorganisation. Intervjuerna har genomförts med utgångspunkt i tre olika teman; ledarskap, gruppdynamik samt effektivitet. Resultatet visar att ett situationsanpassat ledarskap är det som främst används på de två minröjningsfartygen. I analysen relateras resultaten av intervjustudien till den teoretiska modellen "det utvecklande ledarskapet". Analysen visar att det situationsanpassade ledarskapet inte representeras i modellen, något som bör utvecklas i densamma.
