James S Corum is an airpower theoretic who in the last couple of years has made many publications explaining his theories on airpower use in irregular warfare. These theories consists of a broad usage of airpower’s all capabilities to affect the counterpart in an indirect way, which according to Corum is the most effective way of usage.

In this essay we have compared Corums theories to USAF’s way of acting in the irregular conflict inAfghanistan. By systemizing Corums theories into five criteria and applying them to USAF´s acting in the conflict, an empiric comparing study has been made possible.

The study shows that Corums theories have been practised by a high level of joint operating and well used intelligence function as well as strategic transportation. USAF´s acting in the conflict differs towards the theories tough by a high usage of close air support, careless notice for civilian casualties and suboptimal usage of the ability for tactical transportation.

James S Corum är en luftmaktsteoretiker som på senare år givit ut flera publikationer i vilka han beskriver sina teorier om luftmaktsanvändning i irreguljär krigföring. Dessa teorier bygger på en bred användning av luftmaktens alla förmågor för att därigenom få en indirekt påverkan på motståndaren, vilket enligt Corum är dess effektivaste användande.

I denna uppsats jämförs Corums teorier med USAF handlande under den irreguljära konflikten i Afghanistan. Genom att systematisera Corums teorier enligt fem kriterier och applicera dessa på USAF agerande i konflikten har en empirisk jämförelse kunnat göras.

Undersökningen visar på att vissa delar av Corums teorier i stor utsträckning praktiserats så som en väl utvecklad jointförmåga samt flitigt nyttjad underrättelsefunktion och strategisk transport. Däremot skiljer sig handlandet i konflikten från teorin genom ett överutnyttjande av direkta flygunderstöd, bristande aktsamhet för civila offer och underutnyttjande av taktisk transportförmåga.
