Kinas och Rysslands nuvarande relationer präglas av samförstånd och samarbete. Det kinesiskryskaavtalet från 2001 kan ses som ett uttryck för fred och stabilitet, men också som ett uttryckför makt och globalt positionerande, i synnerhet med de kinesisk-ryska relationerna satta i ett historisktperspektiv. Frågan är vilka drivkrafter som kan ligga bakom Kinas och Rysslands närmandetill varandra. Genom en spelteoretisk analys identifierar denna uppsats möjliga motiv tillpartnerskapet i politiska, militära, ekonomiska samt externa avseenden, sett utifrån den sammanvägdanyttan av partnerskap jämfört med icke-partnerskap. Resultatet visar att motiven kan relaterastill det gemensamma intresset att skapa global maktbalans, men kan också kopplas till ömsesidigaberoenden mellan Kina och Ryssland som gör ett nära samarbete nödvändigt. Dessutom harbåde Kina och Ryssland skäl att minska riskerna för internationell isolering. Uppsatsen åskådliggörallmänt spelteorins funktionalitet för aktörsanalys.

Current relations between China and Russia are characterised by mutual understanding and cooperation.The Sino-Russian Treaty (2001) can be seen as an expression of peace and stability,but also – considering the history of Sino-Russian relations – as an expression of power andglobal positioning. The question is – what are the driving forces behind the Sino-Russian rapprochement?Using game theory analysis, this essay identifies possible motives behind the partnershipin strategic, military, economic and external terms, from the viewpoint of the net benefitsof a bilateral partnership, compared with non-partnership. The results show that the motives canbe related to a common interest in creating a global balance of power, but can also be linked tothe mutual dependence between China and Russia, which makes close cooperation necessary.Furthermore, both China and Russia have grounds for reducing the risk of international isolation.The essay is a general illustration of the usefulness of game theory for the analysis of actors.
