Mission command, rooted from Carl von Clausewitz's concepts of warfare as a means to manage complexity and friction, constitutes the Swedish command philosophy. This interview study aims to investigate how mission command is integrated and socialized during basic officer education by interviewing instructors and cadets. This study fills a gap in recent empirical research and contributes to both practical and theoretical understanding of education in mission command in the broader field Professional Military Education. The results reveal that educational prerequisite such as practical training, prior knowledge, instructor experience as well as the shared understanding of mission command, influence integration and socialization. Moreover, unique variations exist between the officer program and specialist officer training based on academic factors and educational objectives. In conclusion, there is a need for the systematic integration of mission command in basic officer education.
