How does conscription and willingness to defend one's country correlate? Current research has shown a discrepancy in the effects of conscription on society where some scholars argue that conscription has negative effects on society whilst some scholars argue that it has positive effects. This study aims to explore conscription and its subsequent effects on society in Sweden, particularly the effects on the people's willingness to defend one’s country. Using a regression analysis this study has found statistically significant evidence that there is a positive correlation between the amount of conscripts and the willingness to defend the country in Swedish society between the years 1990 and 2022. Meaning that more conscripts lead to a higher willingness to defend the country.
This study is a proponent of the argument that conscription is ultimately good for society, both as a means of provision of personnel to the armed forces and also as an influence on the people's willingness to defend the country.
