The Ukraine conflict requires more research to understand both sides actions. This can enhance military science understanding for global decision-makers and be applied to similar conflicts. The purpose of this study is to explain why the use of deception have been successful in Ukraine based on the available empirical evidence. More specifically, it examines the method employed and the factors influencing the ability to deceive the opponent. The successful deception carried out by Ukraine has not only been their own achievement, but the opponent has also contributed to deceiving themselves. While the media often highlights how Ukraine has misled and surprised Russia, in reality, there are significant indications that Russia has contributed equally to the outcome. It is less a result of cunning and more of Russia’s self-destructive behavior. Some notable success factors that have stood out include the opponent’s expectations, intelligence services for gathering information and strong confidentiality within the Ukrainian armed forces.
