Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of why the transatlantic relationship has deteriorated. Since previous researchers have identified that the relationship deteriorated during the Trump and Biden administrations, and that the Franco-American relationship is vital in shaping the transatlantic relationship, these aspects will be examined. To study this, Walts balance of threat theory has been utilized, given that the countries separate threat perceptions and NATO have been identified as causes of the negative trend. Through a comparative case study between 2017 and 2022, the study has identified that the deteriorated Franco-American relationship can be explained by their separate perceptions of China and Russia´s geographical proximity, offensive military capabilities and perceived intentions.
