Abstract [en]
This study analyzes Sweden's national strategy against violent extremism and terrorism with a focus on the principles of deterrence through tactical denial, strategic denial, and the society’s resilience. Given the rising terrorism threat and the unique challenges faced by small states, this theory-consuming case study examines how well adapted the Swedish strategy is in the perspective of deterrence by denial with the help of a theoretical framework.
The study highlights how specific security measures, interagency cooperation, and technological advancements contribute to tactical deterrence. It also discusses political and social reforms and international cooperations that support strategic deterrence. The importance of the society’s resilience through public education and victim support structures, to enhance recovery and resistance against terrorist threats, is studied.
The result of the study shows that the Swedish strategy is well structured to deter terrorism but that there are certain areas, specifically in cost-effectiveness, where improvements can be made.
