Abstract [en]

An anticipatory war begins when a state, under the threat of an enemy attack, decides to strike first. Anticipatory warfare can either be preventive or pre-emptive; involving a full-scale war or a limited attack. The study focuses on the concept of preventive war. Using the theoretical frameworks on concepts by Giovanni Sartori and John Gerring, the study analyses the definition of preventive war by identifying its defining attributes in different levels of abstraction. The study identifies two distinct contexts of the concept preventive war: just war and strategic realism. The results show that the concept preventive war can be described as either ambiguous or clear, depending on the level of abstraction and the contextual awareness of the user. The study finds that the utility of the concept in war studies lies in its ability to create a category of war alongside categories such as aggressive war and defensive war.
