Abstract [en]

Previous research has shown that motivation is vital to reach the ends andmeans in military operations, strengthening moral and keeping capable leaders. This study seeks to explain what factors that influence Swedish senior officers’ motivation to serve, focusing on the question: What factors influence Swedish senior officers' motivation to serve? I argue that perceived fairnessis one of the factors that have a positive impact on motivation. Using multiple regression analysis and existing motivation theories this study examines the motivation to serve through a survey distributed to Swedish officers at the Joint Advanced Command and Staff Program. The result demonstrates that several of the investigated factors influence senior officers’ motivation to serve. Perceived fairness played a significant role and was the strongest influencing factor. Intrinsic motivation factors, such as enjoyment and perceived challenge, were also significantly linked to officers' motivation to serve. These factors appear to have more impact than extrinsic motivators, indicating that senior officers' intrinsic drives are more important to the irmotivation than extrinsic rewards and incentives. These results may give military organizations insights how to design recruitment and developmen tstrategies that attract and retain qualified and motivated officers.
