Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze how two of Swedens biggest political parties, the Social Democrats and the Swedish Democrats used framing before and during the application of a Swedish membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, called NATO. The Russian invasion of Ukraine at the end of February this year is taken into consideration when investigating which issues and problems the political parties are referring to when explaining the rapid shift in the parties national security approach.

A Swedish membership in NATO have during a long time divided the swedish population in half, where one half is certain that a membership would only destabilize the international security situation in the world even more than Russia is already doing, but the other half is convinced that Sweden need a NATO membership to secure our national safety. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has completely changed the political situation, resulting in changed political views from both politicians and the population.

The Social Democrats are a party that has been working for Sweden as a non-aligned nation since the party was founded, and the Swedish Democrats has only been interested in an alliance with the neighboring country of Finland. Therefore, it is of utmost interest to investigate how the two parties have justified and explained their change of opinion to their voters via media, and how this usage of framing can be understood.
