The art of learning to practice what you want to preach : A study about the Swedish army´s described mission command in the light of organizational learning (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This work aims to increase the knowledge regarding the Swedish army´s mission command and support its doctrine development. It also examines if a theory can enhance the understanding of problems regarding mission command and aid in finding solutions to these problems.

This has been done by answering the following question:

How does the Swedish army describe its mission command and if there are problems with it what could the implications be, considered Argyris & Schöns theories regarding organizational learning?

This work shows that the army´s described espoused mission command promotes a culture of initiative and decisiveness. Contrary, the army´s described theory in use is problematic since it promotes indecisiveness and negligence to act. The analysis based on Argyris & Schöns theories about organizational learning shows that the army should transform its governing values toward its espoused ones. In doing so the army should be able to devise learning beyond its problematic mission command, beyond its theory in use.
