Sweden is a nation with a small military relative to its neighbors, especially compared to NATO and the Russian Federation. Air power for small nations like Sweden is a subject rarely discussed and the main theories concerning air power are focused on offensive bombing operations. Bombing is a capability that the Swedish air force is severely lacking and thus there is a disconnect between the air power theories and the Swedish air force. However, in this case study John A. Warden III’s theories regarding defensive operations in the precursor to his five ring-theory, The Air campaign is applied on Swedish doctrine. Sweden is a nation that has not been at war for over two centuries which furthers the disconnect between offensive operations and the Swedish defense-oriented doctrine. This essay is an attempt to reconnect air theory to small nations with a defensive standpoint regarding airpower by using a case developed by Swedish governmental bodies for the sole purpose of training and preparing for crisis. The conclusion is that by using seven aspects of Wardens defensive theories a Swedish air power can effectively be used to ward off aggression as it is described in totalförsvarets forskningsinstituts case four (typfall fyra).
