Abstract [en]
This study asks what strategic narratives are expressed through the use of news reporting. By adapting theories of soft power and strategic narratives this study aims to distinguish these narratives from news articles on Finland. The study uses a combination of textual and narrative analysis in order to examine what kind of categories of strategic narratives are present in the Russian state-funded news agencies RT and Sputnik. The study concludes, by analyzing articles from the mentioned news agencies, that four strategical master narratives can be found in the coverage: 1). Subversive, 2). Undermining, 3). Conspiring, 4). Russia is portrayed as friendly and peaceful.
