The subject of volunteering is often studied but seldom defined and the definitions that exist differs in terms of what is considered a volunteer. This study finds that people who volunteer in times of crisis and disaster, often called spontaneous volunteers, are seldom included in studies on volunteering. To understand this separation, a concept analysis of volunteering and spontaneous volunteering was conducted to attempt to explain the separation between the subjects by analyzing definitions of the concepts. The study then attempts to construct new definitions for the two concepts and compares these to identify if there is any explanation for the separation in the definitions. No conclusive evidence for the subjects to be separated was found and the investigation calls on further studies of the subjects to bridge the gap.
