Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine Kings theories concerning the motivation factors of morale, motivation, discipline and training in mass army and the professional army by comparing the Swedish manuals view from the conscript army and Swedish professional armed forces concerning the motivation factors. This study uses a qualitative text analysis method. The texts from the research material are construed and analyzed on the basis of motivation factors. Thereafter Kings theories are compared with the Swedish manuals using an analysis tool where the outcome of the differences and similarities are discussed.

The result shows that Kings theses on mass army and the Swedish manuals from the conscript army have the most similarities. This is probably because the manuals are largely based on other countries' experiences of war, mostly from World War II.

The Swedish manuals from the professional armed forces of today still have clear influences from our old manuals from the conscript army than from Kings theories of today's professional army. Kings theses concerning motivational factors from the professional armies are clearly different from the Swedish professional armed forces manuals. The outcome was that no change is discernible today regarding today's manuals from the Swedish professional armed forces.
