Abstract [en]

This thesis conducts a narrative analysis on the current DPRK regime’s strategic narrative on reunification, as it appears in articles published on the two Internet-based news platforms, KCNA (Korean Central News Agency) and Uriminzokkiri between January and April 2017. Previous research and literature is used to support the main argumentation put forth, namely that a knowledge-gap exists on how the current DPRK regime could use its strategic narrative in media for primarily attempting soft power, but also for strategic purposes within the so-called third dimension of military power. Hence, the purpose is to fill the gap by increasing the knowledge and understanding by using a complemented version of soft power. In order to achieve this, the period of four months from which the articles derive is one of increased tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The thesis concludes that the DPRK has in fact been using a strategic narrative on reunification for both soft power and military purposes. This is done at the expense of its own narrative cohesion, since the arguments put forth by the narrative contradict each other when switching between purposes. The dualistic behavior of the narrative is suggested to reflect the dishonest intentions of its authors, i.e. the DPRK regime.
