Abstract [en]

Background: The principles of war have currently a central role in military doctrines. Especially concentration, can be considered as one of the oldest principles and be related back to around 500 years BC by the Chinese military theorist Sun Tzu. The establishment of the principles of war can though be seen as problematic, according to the limited researches concerning how principles can be achieved under specific military operations.

Method: In order to investigate how concentration can be achieved the principle must be clarified. By studying theories of concentration by Jomini, Clausewitz and Liddell Hart, five common variables have been identified. These variables are crucial point, combined effects, spread, knowledge of the opponent and reserves. Furthermore, these variables are being tested in a case study of the two successful amphibious operations Husky in Sicily and Neptune in Normandy.

Result: The result indicates that the four variables crucial point, combined effects, spread, and knowledge of the opponent were significant for the outcome in both cases. The variable reserves, was also significant, but only for the outcome in Operation Neptune. Further studies are though required, in order for the results to be considered as generalizable.
