2017 (svensk)Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

Information warfare is becoming a greater component in modern conflicts. This study aims to expand the understanding on how media can be used partly in the waging of war and explores how media’s role is changing. Media in the new generation of warfare has not been studied deeply, though it is believed to play a bigger role than before.

In a qualitative case study of the Russian governmentally financed news agency RT (formerly known as Russia Today), this thesis examines how the Russian narrative was presented and the way in which media was used during the Georgian conflict in 2008 compared to the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

This study concludes that the use of media in warfare has evolved in to play a more complex and central role in the waging of war than before. Media was integrated and used as a part of the warfare in the annexation of Crimea, by framing the political agenda in profitable ways for the Russian narrative and thereby, achieve the same results as by military power, but with less use of force. Media´s role was more sophisticated and played a central part of the information warfare in the annexation of Crimea in 2014, compared to the Georgian conflict in2008, where media made out to play a more supportive role.
